Sven progress & Writeminded

Sven: A little over 1.5K
Migraine: Day 4

Proposal is done and sent to agent. Will hold breath (metaphorically, of course) until she lets me know her thoughts. Revisions on Chris’s book will go to editor Friday. I’m starting to feel free – and it’s a nice feeling.

Today (and last night), it’s onto Syd’s Tempting The Fire (working title.) Have to wrestle Logan and Chance and Marlena into submission. And CREED!!!! I get to write more CREED!!!

I’m over at WriteMinded today – come chat about ghosts!

sleep? sleep is for the weak…

And I’m weak. So, so weak…

Free Will Astrology for Aries for the week of November 20th:

Fifty-five percent of Americans not only believe in guardian angels, but testify that they have been actively aided by the intervention of those divine helpers. Commenting on the results, one religious expert said that “Americans live in an enchanted world.” The 55 percent figure may rise even higher in the coming weeks. A majority of Aries all over the planet, regardless of their religious orientation, could have a mystical experience that will spook and delight them. If you’re one of the chosen ones, don’t get fixated on or distracted by the sheer amazement of the visitation. Make sure you’re alert for its eminently practical guidance.

Dear Guardian Angel.

I seem to always be awake these days, although the alert part waxes and wanes. Still, please choose me to come visit and bring me some sleep. And some firm release dates for my Bantam Trilogy.

Thank you.

I’m over at Sven’s place today, talking about my love for Claire Fontaine notebooks and a certain pilot pen that helps keep me writing.

Sven day 9: 3K between Monday and Tuesday – not bad, considering the kid’s nurse has been sick. Although sometimes, when it’s just us here (with no home therapies) I actually get more done.

Migraine, day 3. Thought it was gone until the kid woke me at 4AM and I realized I shouldn’t have skipped the 1AM med dose. Again, sometimes I work better with the migraine, as I’ll do anything I can so I don’t have to focus on the pain.

Anyway, I’m also focusing on a site redesign – the wonderful Emily & Co over at Waxcreative are doing a fantastic job. One of the reasons I chose them originally was because I adore Jane Porter’s website – and Wax has a blog up about Jane’s site and what makes it so special and reader-friendly. Definitely interesting information if you’re a writer looking to draw people into your site.

Okay, much writing to be done today. I’m hoping to get the new proposal to my agent today or tomorrow and the revisions (which I’m letting sit) to my editor for Friday. And then it’s on to Sydney Croft book 5.

shifting gears

Sven yesterday: 1226 words + longhand synopsis (synopsis is hanging at about 1500 words)

Today, I got some light revisions for Chris’s book (Hold On Tight - book 3 in the SEAL trilogy) thumped against my door – I’ll be motoring fast on those and then all three of the SEAL books will go into copy edits at the same time. That’s both great (since they’re so closely connected) and horrid (mainly because I hate copy edits and doing 3 sets at once could easily topple me over the edge.)

But I’m relieved that my editor liked the revisions I’ve done thus far – majorly relieved.

So I’m going to try to finish the proposal and get a nice chunk of the revisions done as well. Except, of course, the weekend promises to be busy, since we’re having Verizon Fios installed tomorrow (which I’m hearing can be a 6 hour process) and I have a dinner tomorrow night.

I must make use of today and tonight.

Gotta run.

Steph T.

Why…

are some of the only TV shows I watch all on tonight at 10PM? The Unit (YAY because I so thought it was gone for good!), Brothers & Sisters AND Army Wives (although I think there’s not a new AW until next week). Seriously, can they not spread this out? Good thing I’ve got the DVR, but I hate knowing I’m missing something…

Larissa and I are just about done with Sydney book 5′s proposal – we’re tentitively calling it Tempting The Fire but that could easily change. I’m 3/4 of the way through my Chris (Hold On Tight) revisions and I’m working on 2 different proposals for the new trilogy. So things are busy…once I get the revisions off my plate, it’ll be all new writing, for Syd and for me, so that’s always fun!

Have been up since 4AM with the kid – the large Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee has not worked yet. Nor has the Diet Coke or the regular coffee, proving to me once again that caffeine doesn’t do anything for me. And I barely drink it anymore.

Maybe I’ll go nap now…

home

Vacation was great, but it’s so nice to be home. The bed in the house we rented was like sleeping on a board covered with foam. I missed my bed and my house. I’m such a homebody it’s not even funny – always have been – I love to nest.

Anyway, on the ride home yesterday I think I came up with an idea for a new single title trilogy that’s loosely connected to the SEAL trilogy, and I’ve got a semi-plot for the first book.

Of course, I still need to finish revisions for Chris’s book and work on Sydney book 5 proposal with Larissa. We brainstormed a bit yesterday (we brainstormed a lot when she visited OBX, and that was good – got me centered on the main plot and the subplot.)

The problem I’m having is the main hero…I don’t know him yet. Don’t have a name or anything. Must work on that. Like, right now.

Steph T.

note to self…

Writing a trilogy is hard. Harder, even if you’re like me and can’t remember your current hero’s eye color (handy for me that the current hero has eyes that are different colors. or maybe not so handy since this means I have to remember two eye colors)…

Larissa knows this about me. Sometimes, she will ask me what our current Syd hero’s eye color is and I’ll say, they’res kind of like a blueish greenish grayish brownish color.

And then she just stares at me. Yes, I can tell this through email.

So anyway, back to trilogies. They’re HARD. If you’re the organized type, maybe not so much. But you have to remember everyone’s ages and when they met their current girl/boyfriend and when their book took place and if things were resolved in the book before the one you’re writing. You have to be able to carry over subplots without retreading too much old ground but yet, going over old ground for the readers who’ll pick up the series out of order. So basically, you’re taking books that are delicated interwoven and you’re attempting to make them stand-alone as well. All without ripping your hair out or throwing the books out the window.

I recommend a lot of chocolate if you’re writing a trilogy. Feel free to send some along at any given time…

NY to NC

Hanna is hitting New York right about now…she passed by the Outer Banks earlier (aka my vacation spot)…we called about our rental house and power is all restored there. So it looks like we’ll be heading back down there to finish out our vacation. Which is good news.

Except the migraine is stopping me from jumping for joy now. Bleech. I think it’s because of the atmospheric pressure from the storms – Larissa’s had one since last night too.

So anyway, I’ve spent the day working on content for my new website…I’m excited for the change. Actually, I’ve been making a lot of changes lately – scary but necessary ones. And I think September is the best time to do it. For me, September always equaled a fresh start – both when I was in school and when I taught, and really, even though I’m not doing either, I still have that wonderful sense of promise once September rolls around.

Anyway, if there’s anything you’d like to see on my website that’s not currently here, please let me know, either here in comments or you can email me privately via my contact page.

On the to-do list:
1. Sydney Croft book 5 proposal
2. Finish revisions on Hold On Tight (Chris’s book – book 3 of the SEAL Trilogy)
3. Work on new Romantic Suspense proposal

I’ll work a bit on this while I’m on vacation and continue with my reading binge – lots of Roxanne St. Claire, Linda Howard, Tara Janzen and Acheron!!!

Brazen Careerist

Do not choose your critics because they are the best at constructive criticism. Your best critics may be totally undiplomatic; you need to find the people who best understand your best attributes. If they understand your strengths, then they understand when you’re not using them.
-Penelope Trunk’s Brazen Careerist

I love this quote, because it’s so spot on it’s almost painful. Sometimes, when you’re writing and trying to improve on parts of craft that might not be your strong suit, you forget to make what is your strong suit shine. It helps when there are people out there, editors in particular, who know your strong suit and who can remind you that, this is what you need to do – this is what makes you shine, do more of this.

I’m 3/4 of the way done with some final revisions for TOO HOT TO HOLD (Nick’s book) – the hard parts are done and so I’m working on Chris’s subplot at the same time I’m writing his book, HOLD ON TIGHT. Trilogies are hard but being able to work on all three at the same time is really helpful – I can go back and check facts, change facts and timelines, make sure everything is both smooth for people who read all three in a row and yet stand-alone for those who pick the books up out of order. It’s definitely been a challenge, but I’m damned lucky that the books of my heart happened to also be marketable – I know that doesn’t always happen.

When I was talking to my editor today about the books, I told her that the first two were particularly difficult because I’ve had the characters in my head for so long (hello Jake!) that I’ve built a canon for them – and anything that has me deviating from that makes me crazy. For Chris’s book, I changed the canon and I can already feel that the book is easier. Although I wouldn’t trade the first two books for anything – I’ve gotten to do everything I’ve wanted and some things I didn’t know I needed in them, I’m looking forward to (hopefully) a more straightforward path with Chris’s book (read – fewer revisions).

What? I can dream, can’t I? :P

writing, writing and more writing…

So I’m writing and writing and writing on the NEVER ENDING book that is Nick’s (TOO HOT TO HOLD) and I’m writing and writing these subplot heroines who are sisters and I just keep saying to myself, I know there’s something you’re not telling me…

And so I wrote and wrote and suddenly one of the sisters must’ve been so tired of me asking that she was like, here’s our deal and I was like, finally. I mean, don’t get me wrong – their deal is good – worth waiting for. But maybe they could’ve saved me a little bit of angst.

Anyway, I thought about this because I got asked if I’d like to do a writing workshop class at a local arts center and got a mental picture of me sitting on a desk in my pajamas telling the class what I just told you all about those sisters and thinking, will that pass for curriculum?

Last week, Larissa mentioned how she hasn’t been doing any craft posts lately. I don’t know if I ever really did craft posts because I’m not really a craft kind of person. I’ve tried it – different methods, like the plotting boards – and plotting itself, and none of it ever seemed to work for me. Instead, I just use my own method (the write-out-of-order one) and I pray for the best. Eventually, the book gets in shape.

Are their easier ways? I’m sure, but my mind seems to go on strike when I try them.

Hi, I’m your teacher who doesn’t plot! Yes, that will go over well…

Anyway, today, more writing. Must get this book done. Will only stop to watch Rock Of Love, because, well, you know…who wouldn’t?!

FYI, Gus was 31.3 Lbs two weeks and three days ago. Today, he’s 47 lbs. at 4 and 1/2 months.

(this is from 2 weeks ago…I swear he grows overnight)
Gus with frog - 16 weeks old

On a side note – I so didn’t need daylight savings time this week – I needed that damned hour…

Steph T.

today’s progress…

I wrote four scenes yesterday on Nick’s book (Too Hot To Hold) – good scenes, necessary information, but not great scenes. Scenes that drove me crazy trying to fix them, tweak them, do something with them. Then I finally figured it out late last night, right before I collapsed.

They were all in the wrong pov. :sigh:

A few hours today spent moving dialogue and motivations around and now everyone’s happy. But I lost time, dammit. I hate when you spend all day writing and you don’t make any page progress. I like to see page progress. But I have the whole night for that – hopefully now that my plot is semi-squared away, things will move faster.

*fingers crossed*

That’s if, of course, Gus decides to vacate my seat:

Anyway, tonight my reward will be a new episode of Rock of Love!!! But I seriously hope they don’t go to anymore dark restaurants because that was just nasty.
